Success Story

Matt Dobing, Manila Application Developer

Joined LexisNexis Visualfiles in 2002 as first-line Support Analyst

I began working for LexisNexis Visualfiles in 2002 as a first line Support Analyst in the Support Department. My role involved answering the phone and logging support calls from clients. I soon began taking on some of the calls myself and I quickly gained experience of our case management system SolCase and the SOS practice management system. I became a full Support Analyst in the integration team within support, and working in this role meant that I got to know many of our clients and also gained experience with our new product at the time; Visualfiles.

Employees are encouraged to improve their knowledge and skills throughout their careers at LexisNexis Visualfiles and training is a big part of this. I attended a Visualfiles training course whilst working in support and subsequently applied for an internal job as a Legal Product Developer. I was successful in my application and began a 6 week stay working at our Southampton office where the Legal Product Team was based. After my initial training, I continued working for LPT in our Leeds office and became increasingly independent and able to handle my own workload and direction. I learned a great deal about Visualfiles and its uses, and I was involved in various projects including attending the annual user conference.

Working at LexisNexis Visualfiles, there are always opportunities for self development and moving into new areas of the business. I was given the opportunity to take on a project of my own re-writing the standard entity set used in our implementations internally and on site. I very much enjoyed the challenge and the responsibility, and this also led to work on a client installation of our browser product. I continued to learn a great deal about the Visualfiles product and my enjoyment and feeling of accomplishment increased. During this time I was attached to the Product Education team, and as such played a part in training the new intake of graduate trainees. I enjoyed passing on my knowledge and also learning training skills, as well as helping to improve the graduate training program.

LexisNexis Visualfiles is continually expanding and there are always new challenges available within the company. After working with the Product Education team I was given the opportunity to work in my own team using our new, unreleased product, Manila. My role was to lean how to use the product, to test it, provide feedback on its development, and also create an application to be used as a demonstration set for potential clients. Working closely with the Manila Development Team, I started using the product, learning VisualBasic.NET and applying the principals I had used in my Visualfiles development to produce a demonstration set in Manila. As the product continued to improve I became the team leader of the Manila Product Development Team taking on two other employees to work with me and explore the capabilities of the product.

I have now been with the company for 3 and a half years and in this time I have had experience of many parts of the business and worked with many of the people employed here. I am currently involved with the pre-sales side of Manila supporting the Sales Team and travelling to client sites to demonstrate the software whilst maintaining the responsibility for the Manila Product Development Team and continuing the development using the product. It is clear to me that determination and hard work is rewarded within the company and there are always opportunities and new challenges available. There is also an excellent working environment with everyone willing to support each other and this has been evident in every area I have worked within the company.
