Success Story

Helen Walberg, Application Development Manager

Joined LexisNexis Visualfiles in 1995 as a Project Manager

Life at LexisNexis Visualfiles (or Solicitec as it was) started in 1995, when I joined the company as a Project Manager.  At the time, SolCase V5 was being sold and implemented.  My role required a combination of training, developing, planning, diplomacy, negotiation, patience etc etc to successfully move from a sale of our software to it’s implementation.

In 1997, after returning from maternity leave, my first career diversion took place.  Whilst I loved being a Project Manager, the extensive travelling involved, along with the nights away from home just didn’t match my new role as a parent.  So, I was given the opportunity to become the Legal Application Developer.  In this role it was my responsibility to put together and maintain all of the legal applications that were sold to customers as “off the shelf” packages.

An increased workload in this area meant that I was able to build up a team of Application Developers, and I was given the first opportunity to manage a team.  This department, however, was a victim of it’s own success and slowly each of the members were able to take opportunities in other parts of the business.  To date, the team I managed now hold the positions of Senior Product Specialist, Business Development Manager, Senior Consultant, Consultant and Managing Director of LexisNexis Visualfiles Australia.

At this point I took over control of all client training, developing and delivering a variety of training courses to new and existing clients.  This was mainly in the training of SolCase Developers.

In 2000 I enjoyed a second addition to my family and another opportunity in my career development.  At that time the Visualfiles product was just about emerging from the Development Team.  It was my job to be the first user/developer of the product and develop and establish the training required for the rest of the company, along with supervising the compilation of the accompanying help file.

Once Visualfiles was released and established my team was tasked with upgrading our internal system from SolCase to Visualfiles.  This was the first conversion of it’s kind and although brought a number of challenges, was a great learning experience of how a large scale project can be expected to be carried out by our customers.  Our group of applications that make up the internal systems covers all aspects of the business, from Sales, through Project Management to Support and Development.  In it’s entirety it is fondly known as Unify.

The next project to fall in the direction of my team was to put together a standard database for use in all aspects of the company for demonstration purposes, testing, use on client sites etc.  A notional law firm called Dupreys was born and the database build around the latest functionality introduced into Visualfiles, M2.  This is an ongoing project which will continue to develop as the Visualfiles software continues to bring improved and increased functionality.

Today Product Education is now called Application Development.  A team of 6 people who not only look after the Dupreys database, but also maintain the standard entities and develop and maintain the legal application templates (things go in circles they say…).
